Village
There are 44 communes which produce what is generally known as “village” Burgundy, accounting for about 40% of the total production of the region.
I use the italics to indicate that the pronunciation used is the French, even though the French themselves would refer to these as communes. This is good basic Burgundy, without the distinctive terroir, flavours and finesse of the Premier Crus. The labels show the name of the village (commune) in which the grapes are grown, such as Meursault or Gevrey-Chambertin. In some cases this is followed by the name of the vineyard (“lieu-dit” or named place). With just the odd exception all of these wines are made entirely from Pinot Noir (reds) or Chardonnay (whites).
