Savigny-les-Beaune
The village of Savigny lies in a large valley where the river Rhoin flows down from the hills to the West.
The valley cuts through the slope, so the vineyards lies either to the North of the river, with a South-Westerly exposure, or to the South of the river, with an Easterly exposure.
Undoubtedly the best of the vineyards lie in this Southern section, and I would flag these as the most significant Premier Crus : Dominode, Narbantons and Marconnets. On the Northern side, worthwhile 1er Crus at a decent price can be found in Serpentieres, Gravains and Lavieres.
The character of red wines from Savigny is rustic and earthy, in the best hands with a lovely, red-fruited finesse. Good producers include Simon Bize, Camus-Bruchon, Chandon de Briailles and Pavelot.
