Background notes of wood and menthol aren’t enough to mask the expressive and fresh nose of mostly purple fruit, and in particular plum, where added breadth is present in the form of spice and floral elements. The medium weight flavors possess a lush and suave mouth feel while delivering fine depth and length though there is a hint of asperity that my rating assumes will round off with a few years of bottle age.
John Gilman 93+
Guillaume Camus used one third whole clusters in his 2016 les Lavieres and the wine was raised in a one wine barrel this year. The wine is really very classic and elegant on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet delivering scents of cherries, red plums, violets, raw cocoa, gamebird and a complex base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, long and elegant, with lovely interplay of soil, fruit and acidity on the long, suavely tannic and focused finish. This is a beautiful bottle in the making.
