Cask sample Chestnut nose. Sleek and lively and charming. Much more substantial than the Nuits-St-Georges Aux Murgers. Very good balance. Lots of fruit to compensate for the fine tannins. Delightful.

Tasted blind in Hong Kong, this bottle of Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts 2001 from Sylvain Cathiard merely reaffirmed by opinion that he has produced much better wines in other vintages. Here it has a candied blackcurrant and truffle-scented bouquet with an odd tree-bark scent. The palate is structured and dense, but it is missing the finesse and elegance of a premier cru and feels just a little monotonous on the finish, I suspect because of excessive use of new oak.
